Week Four: Words are Powerful Tools!

I use this with my college students as an introduction to the importance of every word they use in a piece of writing.  It works to generate discussion.

  2. Thought provoking. How can I change my word usage in the classroom to make more learning happen? What are we not seeing?

  3. A wonderful video! It was an important lesson this year when we discussed how adding meaning to a sentence doesn't necessarily mean adding more words, but changing what you have. We want our reader to have a vivid picture of what they're reading, this statement REALLY did that!

  4. From Tim
Video (Words are powerful tools) - Very cool video that really gets you thinking. I can see this being applied not only to word choice, but other essential qualities that we stress toward our students. Positive breeds positive.
Video (Word Choice in Writing) - While trying to follow along with the narrator during the "Strong Word Choice" selections, I too found them far too wordy and drawn out. This appeared to me as someone who was trying to use "a lot of big words". As stated previously in this blog, strong word choice doesn't mean more writing.

  5. Thank you for posting this video. It is indeed a powerful way to demonstrate how words can influence the way we respond to things. In this case, it's a beautiful thing to see. However, in the hands of, let's say, a political movement or an unscrupulous politician, it's an evil that needs to be recognized and confronted when it is used. (The video is also an interesting expression of how a visual presentation can sometimes be far more powerful than a written presentation. This story would not have the same punch in text as it did with the visual of the old man alone in the square, the music, the clanging of the coins, and the striking physicality of the woman with the sunglasses.)

On a more basic level, though, this is an awesome way to show the power of words.

  6. This video is a great way to show that words can influence the way the world perceives things.
For the "Word Choice in writing" video, I appreciated the examples that were used by the video author. The HOA letter is a clear example of how word choice can affect the way the letter is received by its intended audience.
